Ethanedisulfonate is degraded via sulfoacetaldehyde in Ralstonia sp. strain EDS1

چکیده
Aerobic enrichment cultures (11) yielded three cultures able to utilise ethane-1,2-disulfonate as sole source of carbon and energy in salts medium. Two pure cultures were obtained and we worked with strain EDS1, which was assigned to the genus Ralstonia on the basis of its 16S rDNA sequence and simple taxonomic tests. Strain EDS1 utilised at least seven alkane(di)sulfonates, ethane-1,2disulfonate, taurine, isethionate, sulfoacetate, sulfoacetaldehyde and propane-1,3-disulfonate, as well as methanesulfonate and formate. Growth with ethanedisulfonate was concomitant with substrate disappearance and the formation of 2 mol sulfate per mol substrate. The growth yield, 7 g protein (mol C)–1, indicated quantitative utilisation of the substrate. Ethanedisulfonate-dependent oxygen uptake of whole cells during growth rose to a maximum before the end of growth and then sank rapidly; this was interpreted as evidence for an inducible desulfonative oxygenase that was not active in cell extracts. Inducible sulfoacetaldehyde sulfo-lyase was detected at high activity. Inducible degradation of taurine or isethionate or sulfoacetate via sulfoacetaldehyde sulfo-lyase is interpreted from

Sulfoacetate is degraded via a novel pathway involving sulfoacetyl-CoA and sulfoacetaldehyde in Cupriavidus necator H16.
Bacterial degradation of sulfoacetate, a widespread natural product, proceeds via sulfoacetaldehyde and requires a considerable initial energy input. Whereas the fate of sulfoacetaldehyde in Cupriavidus necator (Ralstonia eutropha) H16 is known, the pathway from sulfoacetate to sulfoacetaldehyde is not. The genome sequence of the organism enabled us to hypothesize that the inducible pathway, wh...
متن کاملCometabolic degradation of dibenzofuran by biphenyl-cultivated Ralstonia sp. strain SBUG 290.
Cells of the gram-negative bacterium Ralstonia sp. strain SBUG 290 grown in the presence of biphenyl are able to cooxidize dibenzofuran which has been 1,2-hydroxylated. Meta cleavage of the 1, 2-dihydroxydibenzofuran between carbon atoms 1 and 9b produced 2-hydroxy-4-(3'-oxo-3'H-benzofuran-2'-yliden)but-2-enoic acid, which was degraded completely via salicylic acid. The presence of these interm...

2,3-Dihydroxypropane-1-sulfonate (DHPS) is a widespread intermediate in plant and algal transformations of sulfoquinovose (SQ) from the plant sulfolipid sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol. Further, DHPS is recovered quantitatively during bacterial degradation of SQ by Klebsiella sp. strain ABR11. DHPS is also a putative precursor of sulfolactate in e.g. Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3. A bioinformatic appr...

متن کاملMetabolism of dichloromethylcatechols as central intermediates in the degradation of dichlorotoluenes by Ralstonia sp. strain PS12.
Ralstonia sp. strain PS12 is able to use 2,4-, 2,5-, and 3,4-dichlorotoluene as growth substrates. Dichloromethylcatechols are central intermediates that are formed by TecA tetrachlorobenzene dioxygenase-mediated activation at two adjacent unsubstituted carbon atoms followed by TecB chlorobenzene dihydrodiol dehydrogenase-catalyzed rearomatization and then are channeled into a chlorocatechol or...
